How many UK banks are loss making?

Two years on and 1 in 3 UK banks are still loss making. Of the 156 UK registered banks, 50 are loss making. Whilst The Royal Bank of Scotland Plc made a pre-tax loss of £719,000,000 - its best result for 4 years- , National Westminster Bank Plc has worsened, reporting a pre-tax loss of £4,427,000,000 compared to £2,381,000,000 for the previous year. At least Coutts & Co - another RBS group bank - has continued to make a profit, £157,464,000 for the latest year. (All figures for year to 31st December 2011).

1 in 3 banks are loss making

The latest edition of Bank League Tables, published in December 2010, show that 55 of the 154 UK registered banks are loss-making. The most unprofitable bank is Royal Bank of Scotland Plc which made a pre-tax loss in the year to 31.12.09 of £15,284,000,000.

The Biggest Annual Report

The Royal Bank of Scotland Plc's Annual Report and Accounts retains the prize as the report with the most number of pages. For 2008 there were 296 pages, up 19% from 2007.

The Royal Bank of Scotland Plc continues to top the Pre-Tax Profit, Asset and Capital Tables based on its results for the year to 31.12.07. How long will this continue? Not much longer we believe.

Remuneration of Chairman

This used to be a much more comprehensive League Table but now we only have 11 Chairmen's remuneration reported. The most generously remunerated is the Chairman of Standard Chartered Bank who received, for the year ended 31.12.07, US$4,575,000, converted to £2,334,183.67. 2nd comes Barclays Bank Plc with £751,000 for year ended 31.12.07 followed by:
